Apella, Castles and Villages

Lunigiana, Tuscany

ride description

This loop begins at the Tuscan stone house of Montagna Verde in the small town of Apella. Journey along the backcountry road of SP22b through Collesino and Mochignano di Sopra to the fascinating fortified town of Bagnone. Here you can find the castle, the churches of San Nicolò and San Leonardo and the oratory of San Terenzio. Then take SP21 to the medieval village of Castiglione del Terziere. Although this village dates back to 1275, it is certainly not in ruins. The careful preservations of this village allows it to feel as it did in the Middle Ages.

From here continue down the river valley of Taverone to the charming village of Licciana Nardi. Finally, before returning to Apella, it is recommended to take a short detour to visit the Romanesque church of St. Nicholas in Varano and stop at the historic towns of Tavernelle and Taponecco.
