What is a refuge?

A refuge (rifugio in Italian) is a mountain hut that provides food and shelter to mountaineers, climbers and hikers. Picture a hostel with Alpine flair: cozy bunks with thick blankets, hearty food, and breathtaking views. In the Park, refuges are very popular as they are connected to a network of trails and see visitors from around the globe.

Refuges are typically operated by a public organization such as the Alpine Club, while others are privately owned. Many provide sheets and blankets, others do not. For assurance, it's always recommended to bring a sleeping bag. The booking details vary from refuge to refuge. Some operate on a first come, first serve basis and others require reservations. All of this information, however, can be found on the refuge's website.
