Pietra di Bismantova

Castelnovo ne' Monti, Emilia-Romagna

Hike description

Whether you're just passing through or becoming a full-time resident, this is a must-see, must-do hike of the TEA National Park! The small mountain has a table-shaped top about 1 km almost a half mile long, sitting on a layer of marnes and calcarenites (types of limestone), which formed about 15-20 million years ago. Due to the large amount of calcium carbonate in the rock, this spectacular prehistoric geological formation has withstood the effects of erosion, allowing the preservation of a variety of brilliant marine fossil formations.

recommended route

From the Piazzale Dante parking lot, we recommend going left on the 697 trail. The trail loops around back to the starting point so it's okay if you go right!
